Interesting historical record of growth in federal spending and deficits.

“Britain unveils ‘unavoidable’ austerity budget”  (CNN.com, June 22, 2010)

“Los Angeles approves Arizona business boycott” (CNN.com, May 13, 2010)

Typical of so many media reports, this CNN.com article serves subversive revolutionaries by carrying their propaganda to the public at face value. The organizations sponsoring the boycott, such as the National Council of La Raza, Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, and People for the American Way, are not characterized; and the behind-the-scenes revolutionary grip on the Los Angeles City Council is not exposed.

“Arizona immigration law sparks huge rallies” (CBC News (Canada), May 1, 2010)

The above Canadian CBC News report goes even further than the CNN.com story in advancing the strategy of subversive revolutionaries. CBC News allows the demonstrations of “hundreds of thousands of people” “in more than 70 cities” to appear as a spontaneous reaction of diverse Americans to the Arizona law. The planning, hidden objectives, and agenda of the organizations orchestrating the protests are ignored.

With this report, CBS News provides a perfect example of Revolutionary Parliamentarianism at work, in which grassroots protestors create the appearance of mass demand for revolutionary government action (in this case President Obama’s promise for comprehensive “reform” of the country's immigration system.)

Even more shallow is the report’s characterization of the Communist/Socialist May 1st holiday as a “traditional Labour Day in many countries around the world, where rallies are held for a variety of social-justice causes.”

“Climate Fears Turn to Doubts Among Britons” (New York Times, May 24, 2010)

The NY Times report reluctantly acknowledges rising skepticism about serious climate change, but tries valiantly to return the high ground to the fear mongers.

This Republican public relations ploy implies the Constitution is at fault for the failure of a simple majority in either house to control spending.  Moreover, it would institutionalize massive unconstitutional spending at the 20 percent of GDP level, which since World War II has given rise to a $13 trillion National Debt.  And it would not take effect until the fifth fiscal year following ratification by three-quarters of the states.  Phony and dangerous!

Proposals for Balanced Budget Amendments have been around for years.  They blame the Constitution for the unconstitutional spending regularly approved by both houses.  (A simple majority in either house could demand a balanced budget whenever it had the will to do so.)   But this public relations ploy is not just hypocritical.  When Congress fails to muster the two-thirds vote in both houses to send the amendment to the states for ratification,  phony “conservatives” call for the worst possible scenario — a state-mandated constitutional convention that would be controlled by the Insiders.

FRB testimony by Daniel K. Tarullo (CFR) before the Subcommittee on International Monetary Policy and Technology, U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.

Member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors Daniel K. Tarullo insists “that every country with sustained budget deficits and rising debt —  including the United States — needs to act in a timely manner to put in place a credible program for sustainable fiscal policies.” How about merely adhering to the U.S. Constitution?  “Fiscal conservative” Tarullo formerly served on the staff of the late Senator Ted Kennedy.  Central banks regularly extend easy credit to governments, by inflating a nation’s currency, and then demand restraint after the countries get in trouble.

Don’t bet on the demise of global warming fright-peddling yet. While we welcome reports that public opinion has turned against the propaganda, the hoax in support of power-grabbing climate-change legislation and treaties has so much momentum worldwide that the internationalists will not readily let it die. If necessary, they will move it to the backburner until resistance has waned. 

Note: The above CQ report outrageously avoids the issue of whether there is any substance to the pretext for burdensome government action. Nor does it even touch the question as to why U.S. politicians are suddenly reluctant to address the phony crisis.

This devastating critique of the Common Core project for national education standards comes surprisingly from the Boston Herald Editorial Staff.  Nevertheless, it misses the key point:  The federal government has no proper role, constitutional or otherwise, in providing funding to education and prescribing standards.  In fact, a quick way to improve standards would be to get the federal government out of the education business.

Former John Birch Society Executives Launch New Organization

On the weekend of October 20-21, a small group of concerned men and women met in Colorado Springs to launch a new organization — the Freedom First Society.

CEO G. Vance Smith notes: "As our name indicates, our organization's focus is on freedom first — the principles of freedom need to be considered before accepting either the collectivist planning of the State or the seductive promises of ambitious power-seekers."

"We forget too easily an important lesson of history," Mr. Smith emphasizes. "Freedom is hard won, but too easily lost."

The leaders claim that today freedom is seriously threatened by a group of power-hungry internationalists seeking to ensnare the independent nations of the world, first in regional governments and then in a totalitarian world government.

Freedom First Society has been started for the immediate purpose of providing leadership to an organized body of patriotic Americans who will do everything in their power, moral and legal, to stop that conspiracy and preserve freedom.

The Freedom First Society will continue on the path laid down by the late Robert Welch, who founded The John Birch Society (JBS) in 1958. Vance Smith took the helm at The John Birch Society in mid-1991 and led the Society for 14 years. He became the Society's longest serving CEO since Robert Welch relinquished the leadership in 1983.

Nevertheless, in October of 2005 G. Vance Smith and VP Tom Gow resigned from their leadership positions at The John Birch Society when they realized that the Society would fall victim to an imminent coup orchestrated from within. Three key members of the Executive Committee of the Society's Council joined Smith and Gow in handing in their resignations.

Two years later, Vance Smith observes: "We all felt terrible about what happened at JBS. So many good people had contributed their energies into helping The John Birch Society provide busy Americans with some desperately needed principle-based leadership."

"At the time [2005]," continued Smith, "we believed that those leading the coup were not committed to Mr. Welch's solution of building a membership organization with members working together locally to expose the Conspiracy. Developments at JBS during the past two years have confirmed our fears."

"Our mission with Freedom First Society," notes Mr. Smith, "is to fill the vacuum that had arisen because The John Birch Society's leadership is off track."

Freedom First Society Vice President Tom Gow says "Freedom First Society will be far different from virtually every other organization concerned about the same problems we are. There are already thousands of organizations in existence that tell Americans in effect 'just send us money and we'll solve your problem for you.'"

"But that doesn't work," insists Mr. Gow." The problem is simply too big for patriotic Americans to expect to be able to delegate their responsibilities as good citizens to an office staff somewhere in Washington."

Mr. Gow quotes Edmund Burke, the 18th Century British statesman who stood up for the American colonists: "When bad men combine, the good must associate, else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

"Freedom First Society," says G. Vance Smith, "will be guided by the values and vision of America's Founding Fathers and the great patriot Robert Welch."

"In seeking to implement Robert Welch's solution," points out Mr. Smith, "Freedom First Society will nevertheless be using modern technology — particularly the internet — to reach out to and involve a younger age group."

Smith continued: "Membership is open to individuals of good will, good conscience, and religious ideals who will apply dedication and integrity to the organization's purposes, consistent with its principles. A list of our founding principles can be found on our website, www.freedomfirstsociety.org."

Although Freedom First Society will be based in Colorado Springs, the leaders plan for the organization to reach nationwide. Beginning in January,  G. Vance Smith will be crisscrossing the nation with a "Reclaiming America Seminar," looking for volunteers to help set up chapters.
