FAQs
Does Freedom First Society engage in lobbying?
No. Freedom First Society works to inform the public on current issues and provides leadership through its campaigns for volunteers to apply pressure on government, particularly Congress. Informed, active, organized opinion molders within a congressman’s district potentially have the greatest clout in Congress.
Is Freedom First Society political?
No. Freedom First Society is non-political, both by incorporation and by conviction. We never endorse or oppose candidates for political office. Neither do we endorse political parties.
Freedom First Society certainly recognizes that good government depends in part on sending good men and women to Washington and retiring disappointments at the ballot box. But the unique function of Freedom First Society, so desperately needed for real change in government, is to alter the political climate back home by building public understanding of timeless principles and of the organized efforts to subvert freedom.
Simultaneously, Freedom First Society provides leadership to help constituents hold their elected representatives accountable while in office against the multiple pressures representatives receive from their party leaders, the Establishment media and think-tanks, and special interests.
With regard to elections, our principal task is merely to teach correct principles. We rely on our members and those we influence to guide themselves in supporting personalities during election campaigns.
Isn’t such a non-political, educational approach too long-term?
Not so long-term as quick-fix strategies that go nowhere. For decades, the all-too-common approach of conservative “leaders” has been to focus on quick change in Washington through the ballot box or to fight defensive actions on single issues.
But unless the American public gains an understanding of the organized socialist revolution, the quick-fix approach ultimately accomplishes little more than to rotate socialists. And the American public will continue to be misled by a steady diet of disinformation from the Establishment-controlled media.
The enemies of freedom are not so shortsighted. They have taken the time to organize so they can effectively confuse public opposition while generating political pressure for their own agenda in Washington. The big “conservative” mistake has been to elect a well spoken representative and then leave him or her alone to face the enormous socialist pressures prevalent in Washington. (See “The Great American Swindle”).
Are contributions to Freedom First Society tax-deductible?
No. Although Freedom First Society is incorporated as a non-profit in the state of Colorado, it is not neutral with respect to public policy issues. Because Freedom First Society advocates specific actions of government, such as reducing federal spending, withdrawing from the UN, and respecting the limits on government power spelled out in the Constitution, contributions to FFS are not deductible from income for federal tax purposes.
Why was Freedom First Society founded?
Freedom First Society was launched to fill a leadership vacuum — to offer organizational leadership for a realistic plan to overcome the organized forces working to extinguish freedom.
A uniquely realistic plan had been developed almost fifty years earlier by the great patriot Robert Welch. But Freedom First Society’s founders believed that a fresh start was absolutely necessary if his plan were to be implemented and utilized in today’s battle for freedom. (For more explanation, please read Organize for Victory!)
What was Robert Welch’s plan?
Far ahead of virtually all of his contemporaries, Robert Welch recognized the agenda and deceptive tactics of an international socialist conspiracy with a grip on many our institutions. He insisted that the way to break that grip was through exposure, using quality information (he recommended many little known, but authoritative books published long before his organization came on the scene, and he would even republish some that had gone out of print).
Robert Welch understood the power of the American people when aroused and informed, which was why Establishment Insiders regularly orchestrated elaborate deceptions to confuse and disarm the people with regard to their plans.
To reach the American people with effective leadership, Robert Welch knew he could not rely on the Establishment media for communication. So he sought to organize a body of responsible patriots among the public at large who would provide leadership to do battle with the organized socialists and internationalists and compete for public opinion.
(Again, for more explanation, please read Organize for Victory!)
What did Robert Welch accomplish?
On many occasions, Robert Welch would insist: “All we must find and build and use, to win, is sufficient understanding.” Through a growing membership organization and carefully targeted national concerted action campaigns he sought to “find and build and use” that understanding to change the course of history.
Although not widely recognized, his organization gained the respect of an impressive number of Americans, including many opinion leaders and even some politicians. Because of the quality of his leadership and his respect for truth, he was able to achieve this impact despite the efforts of the Establishment-controlled media to smear his organization as a group of anti-democratic “crazies.” Over several decades his organization could count numerous spectacular, but intermediate “victories.”
When was Freedom First Society formed?
We regard our official launch date as October 21, 2007.
Who founded Freedom First Society?
In October 2007, approximately two-dozen patriots who had previously been involved in the freedom fight met in Colorado Springs to form a new organization based on timeless principles, not on personalities. Many had recently been members of The John Birch Society.
Vance Smith and Tom Gow supplied the operational leadership for the Colorado Springs gathering and the immediate launch. However, their action would not have been possible without the financial and moral support of key sponsors such as Wayne C. Rickert, C. Walter Ruckel, and Keith VanBuskirk. Each of these three men had been veterans on the Executive Committee of the Council of The John Birch Society formed by Robert Welch. C. Walter Ruckel had actually been appointed by Mr. Welch to that post.
Who are the Freedom First Society officers?
Freedom First Society’s president is G. Vance Smith, it’s vice president, Tom Gow (see brief bios).
What is the FFS strategy for wresting the Conspiracy’s grip from our nation and altering the course of history?
Our strategy and principles are developed and spelled out in our founding book, Organize for Victory! They reflect the insights of Robert Welch gathered from decades of his writing while providing leadership to the freedom fight.
Although principles do not change, tactics and procedures must change with the times, and Freedom First Society, for example, expects to make heavy use of the Internet, which did not exist when Mr. Welch was alive.
In short, we are committed to building a principle-based membership organization and leading it through concerted-action campaigns, some long-term, others short-term, to help the American people understand how they are being steadily deceived into slavery and what they can and must do about it. Our goal is to strengthen our American heritage of freedom and to preserve it for future generations.
